Innovative Systems for Seismic Protection of Critical Urban Facilities, Experiences in Recent Earthquakes

29 April, 2024

Dr. Bahadir Sadan, ASSISi Secretary General, Professor Fatih Sutcu, ASSISi Board member, and Professor Mineo Takayama, former ASSISi Board member, all participated in a United Nations Human Settlements Programme Technical Training Webinar for experts, policymakers and practitioners.

In an era where urban centers are growing rapidly, the need for resilient infrastructure is paramount. Recognizing this, UN-Habitat has been at the forefront of advocating for, promoting, and implementing innovative solutions to enhance the safety, resilience, and sustainability of urban environments.

Among these, seismic devices designed to protect critical urban facilities during earthquakes are one of the key areas of focus for UN-Habitat to support in the Islamic Republic of Iran. These devices, which can range from advanced base isolators to cutting- edge damping systems, are crucial for ensuring that essential services remain operational in the aftermath of seismic events. The application is underscored for hospital facilities where the services to the casualties are vital in a post-disaster situation.

The Technical Webinar on Innovative systems for seismic protection of critical urban facilities, experiences in recent earthquakes, provided an opportunity for the experts, policymakers, and practitioners to receive presentations on recent experiences of the buildings equipped by such devices in Japan and Turkey during the recent large earthquakes.
