ASCE EMI Mini-Symposium – Seismic Isolation: Theoretical Advancements, Experimental Insights, and Innovative Applications

May 28, 2024 - May 31, 2024

Organizers: Professor Dimitrios Konstantinidis, University of California, Berkeley and Professor Michalis Vassiliou, ETH Zurich (ASSISi member)

Seismic isolation stands as the foremost solution for safeguarding against earthquakes and has been applied to a wide range of structures and infrastructure, including buildings, bridges, historical landmarks, hospitals, emergency operations centers, nuclear power plants, industrial facilities, transportation hubs, etc. In the evolving realm of engineering mechanics, seismic isolation continues to be a focal point of pioneering research and innovation. This mini symposium will provide a platform for researchers and professionals to share and discuss recent advancements in seismic isolation, including both theoretical and experimental aspects, as well as innovative practical applications.

  • Experimental Development of a Seismic Isolation Device for Lunar Surface Habitat Resilience
Oscar Forero*, Shirley Dyke and Julio Ramirez (Purdue University)
  •  Experimental and Numerical Studies on a Low Cost Isolator Based on Rolling of a Rubber Sphere on Concrete Surfaces
Sergio Reyes, Antonios Katsamakas and Michalis Vassiliou* (ETH Zurich)
  • Multiscale Modeling of Elastomeric Seismic Isolators
Eduardo Montalto* and Dimitrios Konstantinidis (University of California, Berkeley)
  • An Assessment of the Vibration Mitigation Performance of Seismic Metasurfaces on Layered Soils by Means of Power Flow
David Carneiro, Zohre Kabirian and Geert Lombaert* (KU Leuven)
  • Intermediate Isolation System for Existing Buildings
