IABSE Symposium Tokyo 2025

Tokyo, Japan
19-21 May, 2025

Professor Fatih Sutcu, of Istanbul Technical University and ASSISi Director, attended the IABSE Symposium Tokyo 2025 held at Waseda University and Righa Royal Hotel in Tokyo, Japan, where he contributed two papers.  The first, “Seismic Isolation and Response Control”, was based on a recently published book by the IABSE Task Group 1.1, and was presented by his colleague Asst. Professor Andreas Lampropoulos of the National Technical University of Athens.

The second presentation focused on recent innovative retrofit applications in Turkiye involving seismic dampers. The number of such retrofit projects is rapidly increasing in Istanbul and other seismically active cities in Turkiye. Existing buildings that do not comply with current seismic codes can benefit from metallic dampers such as buckling-restrained braces and other yielding damper devices. Professor Sutcu together with international partners is conducting ongoing analytical and experimental research at Istanbul Technical University on these areas of application.

Following the symposium, there were technical day tours to significant structures and bridges, as well as the recently established JSIL, Japan Seismic Isolation Laboratory (“E-Isolation”) seismic isolation device test facility near Kobe.
